Epichloë endophytes – new perspectives on a key ingredient for resilient perennial grass pastures

چکیده
The confirmation that Epichloë endophytes are important for pest resistance in New Zealand pastures led to the development of a range novel endophyte strain × host plant combinations enhance persistence grass, while mitigating adverse effects on grazing animals. Successfully delivering these pastoral industry has required scientific and commercial capabilities. In March 2012, proprietary seed established Endophyte Technical Committee. This is cooperative forum ensure strains commerce or under tested uniformly, publish industry-agreed descriptions animal safety insect control each year.

متن کاملPCR assay based on a microsatellite-containing locus for detection and quantification of Epichloë endophytes in grass tissue.
A PCR assay which allows detection and quantification of Epichloë endophytes in tissues of the grass Bromus erectus is described. PCR with specific primers flanking a microsatellite-containing locus (MS primers) amplified fragments 300 to 400 bp in length from as little as 1.0 pg of fungal genomic DNA in 100 ng of DNA from infected plant material. When annealing temperatures were optimized, all...
متن کاملVegetative Hyphal Fusion and Subsequent Nuclear Behavior in Epichloë Grass Endophytes
Epichloë species (including the former genus Neotyphodium) are fungal symbionts of many agronomically important forage grasses, and provide their grass hosts with protection from a wide range of biotic and abiotic stresses. Epichloë species include many interspecific hybrids with allodiploid-like genomes, which may provide the potential for combined traits or recombination to generate new trait...
متن کاملForages and pastures symposium: fungal endophytes of tall fescue and perennial ryegrass: pasture friend or foe?
Tall fescue [Lolium arundinaceum (Schreb.) Darbysh. syn. Festuca arundinacea Schreb.] and perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) are important perennial forage grasses utilized throughout the moderate- to high-rainfall temperate zones of the world. These grasses have coevolved with symbiotic fungal endophytes (Epichloë/Neotyphodium spp.) that can impart bioactive properties and environmental st...
متن کاملAdvances in Research on Epichloë endophytes in Chinese Native Grasses
Epichloë fungal endophytes are broadly found in cool-season grasses. The symbiosis between these grasses and Epichloë may improve the abiotic and biotic resistance of the grass plant, but some Epichloë species produce alkaloids that are toxic for livestock. Therefore, it is important to understand the characteristics of the grass-Epichloë s symbiosis so that the beneficial aspects can be preser...
